Why Knots Matter More Than Gear

May 13, 2026

A bombproof tarp setup with 50 cents of cord beats a $200 system you can’t tie. Here’s why mastering knots is the highest-leverage skill in bushcraft.

Gear wears out, gets left behind, or fails in ways you did not expect. A few trusted knots — taut-line, trucker’s hitch, bowline, sheet bend — turn ordinary line into shelter, rescue, haul systems, and repair. The weight stays low; the skill compounds every season you practice.

Start with one knot until it is automatic in the cold and dark. Then add the next. The journal will keep returning to cordage here because it is the quiet backbone of campcraft and safety on the line.
